Subject Statement of Intent – PE

At Holy Rosary PE develops a child’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform a range of physical activities with increasing competence and confidence. A varied and progressive curriculum is in place to support this in line with the national curriculum. Children develop stamina by being physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and activities, and promote the concept of leading healthy and active lives.

We will ensure all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

At Holy Rosary PE is structured within a long-term plan for KS1 and KS2 to ensure that delivery is broad and balanced.  Classes are taught two themes in PE per half term, and these can include dance, athletics, gymnastics, games, swimming and water safety plus outdoor and adventurous activities.  PE is taught for two hours per week.  We are also part of The Hathershaw College Cluster and so attend a range of competitions and events on a weekly basis.

In addition, we utilise specialised coaches when appropriate (one attends weekly to teach year 5 and 6, and help prepare children for competitions) and are part of the Premier League Primary Stars mentoring sessions in PE.  We have a Holy Rosary Sports Crew, who help with the planning and organisation of sports events, junior sports leaders who support activities at lunchtime and all KS2 children experience a leadership role, as PE leaders are utilised in lessons.

At Holy Rosary children will be able to experience a variety of sports and activities that develop chances for children to be creative, cooperative and complete diverse challenges as both individuals and in groups.  In addition, there will be opportunities to develop leadership and teamwork.  This will allow them to improve their fitness, build relationships and increase their competence whilst encouraging them to build good habits and lead healthy, active lives.

Assessment

In FS PE is assessed using the Early Learning Goals for Moving and Handling, and Health and Self Care as part of the EYFS profile.  These are recorded using the Tapestry online learning journal.

In KS1 and KS2 PE is assessed against key knowledge descriptors for each area of the curriculum.  This takes place half-termly and is recorded using Insight online assessment tracking.
