Subject Statement of Intent – Maths
At Holy Rosary, we believe the Mathematics curriculum should be accessible to all and will maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement. We aim to foster a ‘can do’ attitude, where children are encouraged to see mistakes as a positive part of the learning journey. They should also apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.
As part of our Maths curriculum, we aim to develop:
- A fluency in the basics of mathematics, through varied and regular practice, increasing the complexity of problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply mathematical knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- An ability to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and developing a justification or proof using mathematical language.
- An ability to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing complexity, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
- A love for maths in seeing that maths is a fundamental part of understanding many other subjects through making connections between subjects and giving children opportunities to develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills in other contexts
- We deliver daily lessons that build on children’s knowledge and skills – allowing them to know more and remember more.
We follow the small steps within the White Rose scheme of learning for our daily Maths lessons. As well as this, children are taught an arithmetic lesson weekly. Children are given five retrieval questions every day to help them increase the knowledge stored in their long term memories.
We believe that by the time children leave Year 6, all children should have acquired the Mathematical knowledge that they need to be successful in the next stage of their educational live.

Assessment in Maths
Assessment for Maths is completed throughout the school by class teachers.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Maths is assessed using the Early Learning Goals and Development Matters. This is recorded using the Tapestry Online Learning Journal and Insight Tracker.
In KS1 and KS2, Maths is assessed half termly against key knowledge descriptors for each area of the curriculum. This is recorded using Insight Tracker. Termly, children undertake a White Rose end of term assessment. This assists teachers in deciding upon their termly teacher assessment judgements.
Termly, children also undertake a problem solving test and a mental maths test. This again assists teachers in deciding upon their termly teacher assessment judgements.
KS1 and KS2 Maths SATs take place yearly in May.
