Subject Statement of Intent

At Holy Rosary, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. We believe that high-quality Art lessons will inspire children to think innovatively and develop a creative, procedural understanding

All children will have the opportunity to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Children will develop their understanding of the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form) by providing a curriculum which will enable children to reach their full potential. Our children will also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture of our world.

Key Knowledge

Curriculum overviews showing knowdlge and skills across all key stages can be downloaded below.

Implementation

Each class throughout the school has a two week block of Art per term.  These lessons are delivered by classteachers. During these lessons the children have the opportunities to develop their art skills and knowledge using an individual sketch book which they continue to use each year to show their progression within art. Opportunities for Artistic expression are also provided by class teachers when teaching other subject areas.

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Holy Rosary School is based on the National Curriculum utilising the scheme created by Art Access. Units for each year group follow the progression of:

Autumn - Drawing

Spring  - Use colour, pattern, texture, line, form, space and shape.

Summer – Using Materials

Progression maps show clear progression of knowledge and skills being developed.

As part of the schools Art curriculum, we deliver ART OF LOOKING.  This is being utilised to support the development of subject specific vocabulary whilst exposing children to a greater range of historical and modern artists.  This also enables children to improve their observation skills and talk more confidently about ART they see.

Impact

We aim for all children to:

  • Produce creative work drawing on their own experiences and ideas.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting and sculpture.
  • Master the use of a range of tools and materials.
  • Critically evaluate and analyse creative work using key Art and Design language.
  • Know about a range of great artist, craft makers and designers, showing a good understanding of the historical and cultural development of their art form
