British Values
The promotion of British Values is taught implicitly throughout the curriculum and school life.
The focus of these values in the Primary Curriculum are:
- British Values of Democracy.
- The Rule of Law.
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
As a school we promote these values through a variety of activities.
British Values of Democracy
Class council, Pupil Voice, Classroom monitors and jobs, pupil questionnaires. Writing balanced arguments in English, as well as other subjects. Pupils also take part in debates in a variety of subjects.
The Rule of Law
Ensuring that school rules, including safety rules, are understood and consistently applied. Opportunities for pupils to distinguish between right and wrong. Visits from the emergency services. eSafety rules and their importance. Bikeability and road safety.
Individual Liberty
Pupils learn how and why rules are made in school, and how laws are made in Britain. They learn about the monarchy in History lessons.
Mutual Respect
Pupils celebrate Black History Month. Anti-bullying week is studied in school with the pupils completing a selection of age appropriate lessons. Debates and balanced arguments are completed in class, across a range of subjects.
Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
Pupils celebrate events and festivals from major world faiths. There is a breadth of themes in assemblies. School lunches cater for different needs. Different religions are taught throughout the school. Culture/Theme days are celebrated throughout the school year.
PSHE/SMSC Curriculum Intent
At Holy Rosary Primary, PSHE is at the core of the curriculum. Young people deserve a rich curriculum bursting with powerful knowledge that broadens their horizons and takes them beyond the ‘every day’. The acquisition of skills, attitudes, values and understanding is essential to ensure the entitlement of all pupils’ spiritual, moral, cultural and social (SMSC) development.
Our experiential PSHE curriculum and the ongoing opportune moments that can be witnessed throughout our school enable our children to become independent thinkers who are confident to challenge the unknown and think deeply about the ‘real’ issues. They leave our school with shared values and experiences which prepares them for life in the 21st century with a particular focus on developing good mental health, emotional wellbeing, happiness and resilience. In order to become citizens of the future who challenge social justice and question deep rooted beliefs to create a more equal society, our PSHE curriculum has specific vocabulary at its core. Exposure to new vocabulary can be seen at every teaching point, as well as re-visiting any previous vocabulary. This consistent exposure ensures that teaching builds on previous learning and allows children to discuss, reason and express themselves in a safe and appropriate way. The PSHE curriculum incorporates the understanding of RSE which enables all pupils to be safe and to understand and develop healthy relationships both now and in their future lives.
We aim for children to develop:
- Clarify values and beliefs, develop an individual identity and respect the freedom of others to express their identity
- Develop empathy
- Develop listening and discussion/debating skills
- Identify, evaluate and manage risk
- Developing critical thinking skills
- Assess and evaluate arguments; understanding and challenging concepts such as ‘certainty’
- Be able to separate fact from opinion
- Understand influence, persuasion, manipulation – particularly in relation to the influence of social media.
Each class throughout the school has PSCHE timetabled for a 30 minute weekly block , with Foundation stage covering their objectives daily within their planning and provision. We believe that PSHE plays a vital part of primary education and needs to be taught at least weekly; although there will also be opportunity to make cross curricular links and these opportunities should not be missed. During these lessons, the children through an inspired love of learning and exposure to high-quality vocabulary, will be equipped with the correct tools to develop their own characters and become respectful, tolerant and active members of society by strengthening their life skills so that they can become great citizens of the future. Our external visitors enrich the lives of our pupils and they are able to discuss how the experience impacted their knowledge and understanding.
We deliver the PSHE curriculum by sharing good practice and reflecting the needs of our pupils. There are always occasions where staff may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue which has arisen in their own class. PSHE is an important part of school assemblies where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured. Our PSHE programme of study links with our clear and comprehensive RSE scheme of work (Journey in Love). The teaching and learning of RSE is rooted in the Catholic Church’s teaching about what it means to live well in relationship with others and be presented within a positive framework of Christian virtue. Our teaching of PSHE is always delivered in an age appropriate way which reflects the development of the child. In EYFS and KS1 pupils use Tapestry to record their PSHE learning and this is covered through the development matters objectives.
We are also dedicated in insuring that our school is a happy, stimulating and caring place and we expect high standards of behaviour and good manners throughout the school. We are committed in supporting children’s mental health and we have a wellbeing lead and team of pupils. We participate in national events and our school council, pupil chaplains, wellbeing team, sports leaders also represent pupil voice. Pupils are encouraged to make memories by taking part in a wide range of experiences across and beyond the curriculum contributing fully to the life of Holy Rosary Primary School and the surrounding communities. In doing so they build their own self-confidence, work well with others by becoming good communicators through engaging talk and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. Children learn to understand and respect our common humanity, diversity and differences so that they can go on to form effective fulfilling relationships, that are an essential part of life and learning. Fundamental British Values are explored in PSHE and pupils understand how to accept and celebrate difference. Pupils will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school life and their learning journey by developing good learning behaviours and will enhance their cultural capital.
